Me and Mummy had been dying to go to bath for ages....
- Because we love Jane Austen.
- Because I found out I have ancestors from there!!
- Because it's beautiful, I go mad for the type of stone and architecture.
- WHY NOT, we love going on trips together and there is lots to do.
So here is what we did. After a little wander taking in the sights we headed for Museum of Costume to see the Laura Ashley exhibition, Fifty fabulous frocks exhibition and of course the beautiful Assembly rooms.
We started with the Laura Ashley exhibition. The room was filled with a colourful array of pattered dresses. Mummy told me her and her friends used to swan around Oxford in a number of these styles.I was slightly gob smacked to think how much style has changed so quickly.
These dresses were the most risky I could find. I actually love the green number below, very elegant and flattering.
Laura Ashley really was very clever and really capitalized on a generation of women. I supposed she was the equivalent to Topshop or Zara these days.
This Assembly room was heaven to me. Vaulting ceilings, light and airy, surrounded by columns and plastering, along with some spectacular chandlers (I let out a little squeak with excitement when I saw them.) It was all so divine.
I can just imagine all people of Jane Austins time having a great dance in the season, flinging each other around, tipsy people hanging over the balcony and everyone being very flirty and merry.
We then headed down stairs to the Fifty fabulous frocks exhibition.
The fist dress you came to was a Veuve Clicquot Champagne dress (designer unknown). Needless to say I loved it... but i'm not sure I would want to wear it!
This Red Dior coat was one of my favorite pieces. Fabulous and oozing elegant's.
Can you imagine having to wear something like this on your hips... ahem no thanks my hips are big enough heee... |
I can't help but admire and be astounded by the detail and skill put into making the clothes above. I must have taken years to embroider all that fabric.
This Alexander McQueen piece made me go weak at the knees. Kate Moss next door looked fabulous also. |
